If you have done any traditional martial art, you have probably done something similar to Tae Kwon Do Forms, or Karate Katas. Many martial artists underestimate and even dismiss the importance of these forms, but they would be greatly mistaken to do so. Every style has a different version of their forms, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, and many others. These can be broken down to the different lineage of that specific art form. Different groups of Tae Kwon Do practice different forms including Chon Ji, Palgwae, Songahm, and Tae Geuk. Currently the World Taekwondo Federation recognizes Tae Geuk as their style of Forms.   1. Progression – The Tae Kwon Do forms you practice in your martial arts school are designed in a way to become increasingly challenging to your mind and body. This is why your Tae Kwon Do Forms are used as a grading point for progression in rank, as well as progression for your skills. This helps sharpen the mind,
  2. Coordination and Balance – Tae Kwon Do forms teach you body awareness, and when performed properly can exhibit and develop great power, accuracy, and balance through explosive execution of techniques, knowledge of appropriate strikes and striking points, and strong stances.
  3. Breath Control – Proper breath control and exhaling on techniques will actually help in sport martial arts and self defense, for paying more attention to your breath, and thus managing energy better. In addition, proper exhalation or the Ki-hap (powerful yell) on certain techniques in your Tae Kwon Do Forms can cause the abdomen to tighten, reinforcing techniques, balance, and overall core strength.
  4. Stress Reduction – While learning Tae Kwon Do forms can be challenging, once learned, they can be practiced as a type of moving meditation. When you are zeroed in on each individual technique, you enter a type of self hypnosis, letting your subconscious take over the motions while your conscious mind is at ease, bring you true peace of mind while practicing your Tae Kwon Do Forms. .
  5. Culture – The forms are the root of the tradition you are practicing. Each of the Tae Kwon Do forms has a symbolism which is usually reflected by a force of nature. By understanding the force of nature and how it connects to the Tae Kwon Do forms that you are practicing, you are truly reaching into the roots of Tae Kwon Do.
