Martial Arts and Conditioning

Now first and foremost, let me specify the difference between fitness and conditioning. Now, usually these go hand in hand, but there are some significant differences, depending on your goals. Fitness is an open ended word, which can mean as little as, you look good in the mirror, or you have a low body fat percentage. Conditioning is very specific in that it pertains almost exclusively to performance, and personal ability. Martial Arts conditioning often refers to sport martial arts, but it can also refer simply to goal setting.

For example, say I have this workout set up, and I’m doing it every day:

  • 100 Punches (50 each, easier than you think)
  • 20 Knee Strikes, each leg
  • 10 Front Kicks, each leg
  • 10 Roundhouse Kicks, each leg
  • 10 Side Kicks, each leg
  • 10 Axe kicks, each leg
  • 10 Inner Crescent Kicks, each leg
  • 10 outer Crescent Kicks, each leg
  • 10-20 push-ups
  • 10-20 Burpees

So that’s a very basic workout, and it can be done in under 10 minutes. Not feeling challenged? Repeat it. Still not feeling it? Up the reps. That’s already 100 punches, and 120 kicks right there. If you’re doing this for the first time, you may be drenched in sweat by now. If not, STEP IT UP. Take those kicks, and do 15 of each on both legs, take it up to 200 punches. One note though, is do NOT EVER let your form slip. If you’re noticing that your kicks at the end don’t quite look as good, they don’t probably work as well. You have overloaded your body, and since you can’t work your muscles as well, your reps are losing effectiveness and thus value. When you can get to 1000 punches and kicks at full form, you are gonna have some AWESOME muscular endurance.

In the end, martial arts can be a full body workout that does not require weights, and once you put these together, you can get more and more ideas to create your own workouts.
